The 10 LOVE COMMANDMENTS
Embracing LOVE in Every Aspect of Life
LOVE is the foundation of our existence, guiding our ACTIONS, THOUGHTS, and RELATIONSHIPS.
Here are the 10 LOVE COMMANDMENTS to help us embody love in every facet of our lives.
COMMANDMENT #1: God’s LOVE
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” – Deuteronomy 6:5
We must LOVE the One who created all things in the heavens and on the earth. We must LOVE the One who wakes us up every day. We must LOVE the One who takes care of the earth every day. We must LOVE our Creator with all our hearts, mind, and strength.
Definition of God’s LOVE:
God’s LOVE is the profound and unwavering devotion to the Creator who sustains and governs all existence. It involves a complete dedication of one's heart, soul, and strength to honor, worship, and obey God. This love is rooted in gratitude for God's continual presence and care, and it manifests through living in accordance with His will and showing love to all of His creations.
Example: When we follow His commandments, it shows our deep LOVE for God. When we express love to all of God’s creations, it shows our deep LOVE for God.
God’s LOVE is about developing a deep, personal relationship with the Divine, characterized by reverence, obedience, and a commitment to reflecting His love in our actions towards others.
COMMANDMENT #2: Self LOVE
“And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – Matthew 22:39
How can we express LOVE towards people if we don’t LOVE ourselves? LOVE yourself to the utmost! When we RESPECT ourselves, we LOVE ourselves.
Definition of Self LOVE:
Self LOVE is the practice of valuing and caring for oneself with the same dedication and compassion one would extend to others. It involves recognizing one's inherent worth, prioritizing mental and physical well-being, and maintaining integrity and self-respect. Self LOVE is the foundation for building healthy relationships and a fulfilling life.
Example: Caring about our soul shows we LOVE ourselves. Taking care of our health and body shows that we LOVE ourselves. Having integrity shows that we LOVE ourselves.
Self LOVE is about nurturing and honoring oneself, enabling us to live authentically and extend genuine love and care to others.
COMMANDMENT #3: Neighborly LOVE
“The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:31
We must show compassion for people that “WE KNOW” and for people that we “DON’T KNOW”. Showing LOVE to people signifies our Godly heart.
Definition of Neighborly LOVE:
Neighborly LOVE is the practice of showing KINDNESS, EMPATHY, and RESPECT to everyone around us, whether they are familiar or strangers. It involves extending genuine care and assistance, reflecting a heart that mirrors God's love for humanity. Neighborly love promotes UNITY, UNDERSTANDING, and the WELL-BEING of our communities.
Example: Say hi to your next-door neighbor sometimes, do some humanitarian work, smile at people, open the door for someone, speak the truth to people.
Neighborly LOVE is about building bridges of goodwill and compassion, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and support that enriches our lives and those of others.
COMMANDMENT #4: Unconditional LOVE
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
We must express LOVE without conditions attached. Our LOVE for people should be a LOVE of open arms.
Definition of Unconditional LOVE:
Unconditional LOVE is a selfless, unwavering affection that remains constant regardless of circumstances or actions. It is characterized by complete acceptance, forgiveness, and a commitment to loving others without expecting anything in return. This form of love mirrors the divine love that God shows to us, emphasizing an enduring and inclusive approach to relationships.
Example #1 (Loving WITH a condition): I can’t forgive you. I will only show love to you “IF” you tell me that you’re sorry for what you did. I ONLY show love to people who show me love.
Example #2 (Loving WITHOUT a condition): I will always love you no matter what happens between us. I will never turn my back on you because I have unconditional love for you. I will always FORGIVE you for any wrongdoings.
Unconditional LOVE is about embracing others with an open heart, offering steadfast support and compassion, and reflecting the purest form of love that transcends all boundaries.
COMMANDMENT #5: FRIENDSHIP LOVE
“Jonathan, my brother, I miss you! I enjoyed your friendship so much. Your love for me was wonderful, stronger than the love of women.” – 2 Samuel 1:26
When we call someone a FRIEND, we should mean it from the bottom of our heart.
A FRIEND is a person who will never turn their back on you.
A FRIEND is not an associate.
A FRIEND should be considered family.
Definition of Friendship LOVE:
Friendship LOVE is the deep affection, trust, and loyalty shared between friends. It involves MUTUAL RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING, and SUPPORT, creating a bond that often feels like family. Friendship LOVE is characterized by the willingness to stand by each other through GOOD TIMES and BAD, offering a safe space for HONESTY and VULNERABILITY.
Example: Respect your friends. Value your friends. Don’t take your friends for granted. Don’t take advantage of your friends. Don’t hurt your friends.
Friendship LOVE is about cherishing and nurturing the special connection that friends share, ensuring that it remains a source of strength, joy, and comfort throughout life.
COMMANDMENT #6: Family LOVE
“If we say we love God but hate any of our brothers or sisters in his family, we are liars. If we don’t love someone we have seen, how can we love God? We have never even seen him.” – 1 John 4:20
Our LOVE for family is strong because we’ve built relationships with our family. We’ve created a special bond with our family. And we should cherish that family bond.
Definition of Family LOVE:
Family LOVE is the unwavering affection, care, and support shared among family members. It is characterized by deep bonds, loyalty, and a sense of belonging. Family love involves nurturing, protecting, and uplifting each other through life's challenges and celebrations. It is about valuing and appreciating each other’s presence and contributions to the family unit.
Example: Respect your family, value your family, don’t take your family for granted, don’t take advantage of your family, don’t hurt your family.
Family LOVE is the foundation of strong relationships, offering a sense of security and unconditional support. It is a love that endures and grows, fostering unity and harmony within the family.
COMMANDMENT #7: Romantic LOVE
“But each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself. And a wife must respect her husband.” – Ephesians 5:33
Be romantically in love with your boo. Don’t betray your boo. Respect your boo.
Definition of Romantic LOVE:
Romantic LOVE is a deep, passionate, and committed affection between partners that encompasses EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL, and SPIRITUAL connections. It is characterized by MUTUAL RESPECT, TRUST, INTIMACY, and the desire to support and uplift each other. Romantic LOVE involves both the expression of heartfelt emotions and the demonstration of actions that reinforce the bond.
Example #1: Be compassionate toward each other. Be passionate toward each other. Be respectful toward each other.
Example #2: When you’re in a romantic relationship, you should not cheat, because you wouldn’t want your lover cheating on you. Therefore, we should treat our lover the same way that we want to be treated.
Romantic LOVE is about creating a partnership built on trust, respect, and mutual care, where both individuals thrive together, supporting each other's growth and happiness.
COMMANDMENT #8: Enemy LOVE
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” – Matthew 5:44
LOVE your haters. They say when we have haters, it means we’re doing something right. Only LOVE has the power to overcome that envious emotion. All bad emotions must be fought through LOVE.
Definition of Enemy LOVE:
Enemy LOVE is the practice of showing COMPASSION, FORGIVENESS, and KINDNESS towards those who oppose or mistreat you. It involves seeing beyond their actions to recognize their humanity and choosing to respond with grace and empathy. By loving our enemies, we break the cycle of hatred and pave the way for reconciliation and peace.
Example: Don’t seek revenge on haters, don’t feed into haters' trash talk, pray for your haters, don’t hate the person… hate their bad deeds.
Enemy LOVE transforms NEGATIVITY into POSITIVITY and reflects the ultimate strength of character and faith. It’s about rising above conflict and demonstrating the power of love to heal and unite.
COMMANDMENT #9: Tough LOVE
“He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” – Proverbs 13:24
Tough LOVE involves being firm and decisive in addressing situations. It is essential to apply tough LOVE with respect and compassion, ensuring it is constructive rather than punitive.
Definition of Tough LOVE:
Tough LOVE is a form of love that is firm and disciplined, aimed at fostering growth, responsibility, and positive behavior. It involves setting clear boundaries and enforcing consequences to help others make better choices. While it may involve difficult or uncomfortable actions, the intention is always rooted in genuine care and the desire to see the person thrive.
Example #1: When children misbehave, discipline them with tough love by using appropriate consequences like timeouts or grounding. This teaches them accountability and helps them understand the importance of their actions.
Example #2: Sometimes, we need to show tough love to our friends and family to help them stay on the right path. This might involve having difficult conversations or setting firm boundaries to guide them towards better choices.
Tough LOVE is about caring enough to correct and guide, always aiming for the well-being and growth of those we love.
COMMANDMENT #10: Wise LOVE
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” – Matthew 10:16
Sometimes people will try to walk all over you when they know that you are a person of LOVE and peace. Jesus said to be wise as a serpent, but harmless as a dove. We must protect ourselves from certain people and things. We must be on our P’s & Q’s daily from people who might be potentially harmful to us. We don’t necessarily have to hang out with someone to LOVE them. Some relatives and friends are best to LOVE from a distance (Long-Distance-Love).
Example: If a relative or friend has sneaky ways or always doing you wrong, it will be best to keep minimum contact with that person, but continue to love them through the power of Christ.
Wise LOVE requires a balance between maintaining your compassionate nature and protecting yourself from potential harm. This doesn't mean closing your heart, but rather being discerning about your INTERACTIONS and BOUNDARIES. Here are a few tips on practicing wise love:
- Set Boundaries: Establish clear limits with those who have hurt or taken advantage of you. Communicate these boundaries respectfully and firmly.
- Discernment: Use your wisdom to identify when someone’s behavior is toxic. Trust your instincts and prioritize your well-being without compromising your loving nature.
- Forgiveness with Caution: While it’s important to forgive, wise love means not putting yourself back into harmful situations. Forgive, but remember to protect yourself.
- Self-Care: Loving yourself includes protecting your mental and emotional health. Don’t feel guilty for taking steps to ensure your own well-being.
- Positive Influences: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Their positive energy will reinforce your loving nature while providing a safe space.
- Distance with Compassion: Sometimes, the best way to love someone is from afar. This can help you maintain your peace while still holding love for them in your heart.
By practicing WISE-LOVE, you ensure that your loving spirit remains intact and vibrant, even in the face of adversity. Protect your heart, but never stop letting it lead you towards COMPASSION and KINDNESS.
By embracing these 10 LOVE COMMANDMENTS, we can live a life filled with COMPASSION, RESPECT, and GENUINE AFFECTION for all. Let LOVE be the guiding force in all that you do.
